Hello and welcome to our Spring edition of the BeOnBoard newsletter!

With the clocks jumping forward and the first warm weekend of the year, we can say for sure (well, it is the UK...) that it is indeed definitely Spring! A time to start opening those windows and letting in some refreshing new air to lift the spirits and put a spring in your step.

And what to do with all this new energy? You could get down to some serious spring cleaning or perhaps take up a new hobby, but at BeOnBoard we think you should put your energy into diversifying our region's leadership.

Read on to find out how BeOnBoard candidates and organisations have joined our National Lottery funded ASPIRE programme to improve racial diversity in the board room, see which Board roles are looking for your expertise, as well as other news from our adventures in diversity!

ASPIRE

On behalf of BeOnBoard, we’d like to say a massive THANK YOU to all the aspiring Trustees of Colour and VCSE organisations who applied for ASPIRE – a pioneering boardroom leadership development programme for People of Colour.

From just a quick look at the data we can already see what matters most to our Aspiring trustees, and that is values. People want to join Boards to give back to communities and to support organisations that matter to them. That level of passion and affinity with an organisation's mission is an important asset that can add value via new energy, expertise, ideas, and connections to help amplify impact. Here’s what they had to say about why they ASPIRE to become Trustees…

1625 Independent People

For over 35 years 1625 Independent People (1625ip) has worked with young people who are homeless, leaving care or at risk of homelessness in Bristol and the South West. As well as providing safe, stable accommodation, 1625ip provides practical and emotional support to ensure vulnerable young people can build healthy relationships, develop independent living skills and can access jobs and training.

Now, 1625ip are looking for Trustees with skills and experience in:

Asset Management
Project & Organisational Budgeting

AND THE OSCAR GOES TO... DIVERSITY

Were the 2022 Academy Awards a slap in the face for diversity? Although this year's Oscar ceremony has been dominated by one story in particular we wanted to focus on the positives at the world's most famous film awards.

While the 2021 Oscar nominees are still the most ethnically diverse in the award's history, this year's acting nominations 2022 gave us both Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis for King Richard, Denzel Washington for The Tragedy of Macbeth and Ariana DeBose for West Side Story.

Jane Campion made Oscar history by becoming the first woman to earn repeated nominations for Best Director, with her film The Power of the Dog being recognised in 12 categories and ultimately taking home the award!

Ryusuke Hamaguchi has become the third Asian filmmaker in a row to be nominated for the Best Director award, becoming the first Japanese director to be honoured since 1986.

The major breakthrough of the night was CODA, the first film with a predominantly deaf cast to be nominated for best picture, let alone actually winning the award. And then it went and bagged itself another award for Best Adapted Screenplay!

FIVE YEARS ON...

It's five years since the publication of the first Report into the
Ethnic Diversity of UK Boards in 2017 by Sir John Parker and the Parker Review Steering Committee. So what's changed?

At Least One by '21 refers to the goal of every company in the FTSE 100 to have at least one board member from an ethnic minority by the end of 2021. While only 89 companies were able to achieve this by the end of last year, 5 more appointments have since been made meaning that 94% of the FTSE 100 Companies will have achieved their goal by May 2022. Although this feels like the bare minimum companies in the FTSE 100 could be doing, it's worth remembering that in 2016 only 47% of FTSE 100 companies had people from minority ethnic groups in their Boardrooms.

RAMADAN
April 2nd - May 2nd

For Muslims across the globe, these few weeks are a sacred time of worship, devotion and reflection. This year, Ramadan is expected to begin on Saturday 2nd April 2022, depending on the sighting of the moon. Our friends at Bristol Muslim Strategic Leadership Group are campaigning for a plastic-free Ramadan this year. 2022 also marks the third year that Ramadan activities have moved online due to COVID-19 and Bristol misses the chance to break fast on St Mark's Road in Easton for the Grand Iftar. Fingers crossed that 2023 will see the return of this vital cultural and community building event.

Women's History Month isn't over yet. Of course, we encourage awareness at ALL times but while this month is still in progress why not take the tame to reflect on these incredible groundbreaking women?

And last but in no way least, we'd like to say a massive congratulations to the brilliant BeOnBoard Candidates who have successfully stepped up to change the face of our region's leadership.

So here's a big round of applause for Louise deCordova and Louise Goux-Wirth who have joined the board at Watershed, for Lorna Henry who is embarking on a new chapter at Ad Infinitum theatre company, and for Domini Harewood, Margaret Simmons-Bird and Priya Kaur who are among the latest governors to join the University of the West of England, and many more we are yet to announce!
